What Is Healthspan? The Idea Behind the Name

Healthspan is more than our name. It is the idea of staying active, capable, and well throughout the years you live.

Most people who walk through our doors have never stopped to define the word on the sign. Healthspan sounds like a wellness brand — and it is one — but it's also a real term with a specific meaning, and that meaning is the whole reason this place exists. So it's worth a few minutes to explain it.

Healthspan vs. Lifespan

Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how long you live well — the years spent active, mobile, sharp, and doing the things you enjoy, before age or illness starts taking them away. Researchers sometimes measure it as "health-adjusted life expectancy": the years lived in good health rather than simply the years lived.

The gap between the two is bigger than most people assume. A 2024 analysis in JAMA Network Open looked at all 183 World Health Organization member states and found the average person spends close to a decade — about 9.6 years globally — living with disease or disability at the end of life. In the United States, that gap was the widest in the world, at more than twelve years. In other words, the goal isn't only to add years to your life. It's to add life to your years.

Where the Word Comes From

"Healthspan" isn't marketing invention. It first appeared in the scientific literature in the late 1980s, when a writer in the journal Science argued that after a century of extending lifespan, the next goal for the field should be "the maintenance of full function as nearly as possible to the end of life." For years it lived mostly inside gerontology — the study of aging — before longevity researchers and authors carried it into the mainstream. Merriam-Webster only added it to the dictionary in 2018. The idea, though, is timeless: it's the difference between being alive and being well.

How Different People Use the Term

Part of what makes healthspan a useful word is that it means something slightly different to everyone, and all of those meanings are valid. For an athlete, healthspan is staying strong and injury-resilient season after season. For a busy professional, it's having the energy at 6 p.m. that you had at 9 a.m. For someone in their fifties or sixties, it's protecting mobility, balance, and independence for the decades ahead. For a new parent, it's simply keeping up. The common thread is quality of life — the capacity to keep doing what matters to you.

How We Turned an Idea Into a Social Club

Here's where we took a liberty with the concept. Extending your healthspan, as the science describes it, can sound clinical — a to-do list of interventions. We didn't want a clinic. We wanted a place people actually look forward to.

So we built Healthspan as a wellness speakeasy. The original speakeasies of the 1920s were hidden rooms where a mixed, like-minded crowd gathered during Prohibition — you spoke easy at the door, stepped inside, and found community. They were less about the drink than about belonging. We borrowed the feeling and left the alcohol out of it. Step off Brickell Avenue and into a calm, low-lit, welcoming space where the people around you are all there for the same reason: to feel good and to invest in the long game. It's a social club for people focused on quality of life.

The Philosophy: Minimum Effective Dose

The other thing that defines Healthspan is what we don't ask of you. A common trap in wellness is that feeling better becomes a second job — hours of protocols eating the very life you're trying to improve. We reject that. Healthspan is built around the principle of minimum effective dose: the smallest amount of a service that delivers the benefit, and no more.

That's why our sessions are short by design. PEMF is 14 minutes. Cryotherapy and the cold plunge are around three minutes each. Red light is ten. You can prime, recover, and be back to your day inside a lunch break. Our members aren't trying to spend their whole day trying to feel better — they're trying to feel better so they can get on with everything else that matters.

The Services Behind the Idea

Under one roof we bring together the recovery and longevity services that tend to be scattered across a city: PEMF, red light therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, whole-body cryotherapy, cold plunge, infrared and traditional sauna, pneumatic compression, and InBody body-composition testing. None of these is a magic bullet, and we're careful never to claim otherwise. What they offer is a set of tools — most of them low-effort and evidence-informed — that you can combine into a routine that fits your goals. We call those combinations stacks, and they're the heart of how Healthspan works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is "healthspan" a real scientific term?
Yes. It's used in gerontology and longevity research to describe the years of life spent in good health, as distinct from total lifespan.
What's the difference between healthspan and lifespan?
Lifespan is how long you live. Healthspan is how many of those years you spend healthy, active, and functional.
Do I need to be an athlete or a wellness expert to come to Healthspan?
Not at all. Members range from athletes to first-timers. Our team helps you start simple and build from there.
Why do you call it a speakeasy?
It's about the feeling — a welcoming, low-key social space for like-minded people, inspired by the community of 1920s speakeasies, minus the alcohol.
Why are the sessions so short?
By design. We follow the minimum-effective-dose principle so recovery fits into your day rather than taking it over.
