Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Brickell, Miami: A Plain-Language Guide

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses increased air pressure and concentrated oxygen to increase the oxygen available to the body.

Healthspan offers three hyperbaric chambers using oxygen concentrators.

Of all the services at Healthspan, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the one people are most curious — and most confused — about. It sits at the intersection of serious medicine and wellness, and there's a lot of overstated marketing out there. So we want to explain it carefully and honestly: what it is, what the science genuinely supports, and what a session in one of our Brickell chambers in Miami is actually like.

What Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Is

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, means breathing oxygen-enriched air inside a pressurized chamber. The pressure is the key ingredient. Under increased pressure, your blood and tissues can take on more oxygen than they would at normal atmospheric pressure. You sit or lie comfortably in the chamber, breathe, and let the environment do the work — most sessions with us run about an hour.

An important note on our setup, because it matters: Healthspan's chambers use oxygen concentrators, not 100% oxygen. We deliberately do not run pure oxygen. Our chambers operate at up to 2.0 ATA — a measure of pressure, roughly twice normal atmospheric pressure. This is different from the high-pressure, pure-oxygen protocols used in hospitals, and we're careful not to blur that line.

A 350-Year-Old Idea

Pressurized-air therapy is surprisingly old. Back in 1662, a British physician named Nathaniel Henshaw built a sealed chamber he called the "domicilium," using bellows to raise and lower the air pressure for his patients. In the 1800s, "pneumatic institutes" using pressurized air spread across Europe. The real scientific foundation came from diving medicine: as divers went deeper and came up too fast, doctors learned to treat decompression sickness — the bends — by re-pressurizing them, and the U.S. Navy formalized these treatments in the 20th century. Modern hospital HBOT grew out of that lineage.

What the Evidence Actually Supports

This is where honesty matters most, because HBOT is heavily marketed.

Established: specific medical uses

Clinical HBOT — high pressure, pure oxygen, in a medical setting — is an established, FDA-cleared treatment for a defined list of conditions, including decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, certain non-healing wounds, and severe burns. These are real, evidence-based medical uses delivered under medical supervision.

The important caution

The FDA has publicly warned that HBOT is often marketed for conditions it has not been proven to help, and that some of those claims could mislead people. We take that seriously. Healthspan does not offer HBOT to treat any medical condition, and we won't tell you it does.

Emerging: recovery and general wellness

The use most relevant to our members — hyperbaric sessions for athletic recovery and general wellbeing — is an area of active but preliminary research. Early studies on recovery after intense exercise are promising but small and mixed. There's also intriguing early research on HBOT and markers of cellular aging, though those studies used the high-pressure, pure-oxygen clinical protocol, had very small samples and no control groups, and haven't been replicated — so they can't be applied to a wellness setting like ours. We share this because you deserve the real picture, not the hype.

What to Expect at Healthspan

We offer more than one hard-shell chamber, so sessions can be private or shared, including a multi-person chamber — so you can go in solo or alongside a friend. You'll settle in, and over the first 5 to 10 minutes the chamber gradually pressurizes. The main thing you'll notice is a feeling of fullness in your ears, like on an airplane during descent; we'll show you simple techniques to equalize, such as swallowing or gently yawning. Then you relax for the session — many people read, listen to something, or simply rest — and at the end the chamber slowly returns to normal pressure over another 5 to 10 minutes.

It's the longest and calmest service we offer, which is exactly why members like to build a slower, restorative visit around it.

HBOT in a Stack

Because it's the anchor of a longer visit, HBOT stacks beautifully with gentler services. A popular Healthspan sequence is PEMF, then hyperbaric oxygen therapy, then red light therapy — a calm, unhurried stack. Our stacking guide explains how to build a session around the chamber.

Who Should Be Cautious

HBOT isn't right for everyone. It's not appropriate if you have an untreated collapsed lung (pneumothorax), and it can be uncomfortable or unsuitable if you have certain ear or sinus problems, a current cold or congestion, or specific lung conditions. Pregnancy calls for extra caution. If you have any medical condition or take medication that could be affected, talk with your healthcare provider before booking, and our team will review a few screening questions with you as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do your chambers use 100% oxygen?
No. Our chambers use oxygen concentrators, not pure oxygen, and operate at up to 2.0 ATA. This differs from the pure-oxygen protocols used in hospitals.
What does a session feel like?
Calm and easy. The main sensation is ear fullness as the chamber pressurizes, similar to an airplane. We'll show you how to equalize. Most sessions run about an hour.
Is HBOT a medical treatment?
Clinical HBOT is an established treatment for specific conditions in medical settings. Healthspan offers hyperbaric sessions as a wellness service, not to treat any medical condition.
Will my ears hurt?
You'll feel fullness, like on a plane. Simple techniques — swallowing, gentle yawning — relieve it, and we pressurize slowly to keep it comfortable.
Can I do a session with a friend?
Yes. We have hard-shell chambers, including a multi-person chamber, so you can share a session.
